This one’s for the brokers.

Here’s the deal.

I’ve been on the Board of the Arizona Business Brokers Association since 2020.

And in that time, I’ve met a lot of brokers.

But the first broker I met was not a member of AZBBA.

The first broker I ever knew was my mom.

My mother is one of the most impressive humans I know.

At the age of 42 she had a career as a dental hygienist.

With 4 young kids at home.

(Two of those were twins, just to add a little color.)

After 25 years as a dental hygienist, she resolved to get her MBA.

She applied and was accepted to an exclusive MBA program at the University of Ottawa, Canada.

I remember that she was one of few in the program who paid the tuition herself instead of a company sponsoring her.

To say those two years was a challenging time was an understatement.

She worked late at night on group projects and assignments after a full day of work at the dentist office.

I don’t remember her ever complaining, but surely, she was exhausted.

After graduation, she found a way to fuse dental hygiene and business.

Today, some 30 years later, she is an extremely successful broker of dental practices.

An expert in her industry and her craft, I have witnessed her facilitate countless transactions.

Sometimes, the experience breaks her heart.

She often works with dentists with terminal health conditions who need to sell.

Or have lost their spouses.

I hear her on the phone.

She listens to their stories with incredible compassion.

She liaises with the attorneys to diffuse unnecessary legal tension.

She keeps the entire deal on track and moving forward to closing.

She gets outcomes for her clients.

I am a believer in the involvement of a good broker in a business transaction.

In fact, I prefer it.

Brokers can go where attorneys can’t.

They can facilitate productive parallel conversations between buyer and seller.

Suggest mutually-beneficial, creative solutions.

Keep the tone collaborative, courteous and even pleasurable.

I’ve seen it done right.

So, this one’s for the brokers.

I know your value and what you bring to the table.

Thank you for your continued trust and for sharing your awesome clients with us.

And here’s to my mom.
